5 Reasons You Should Invest in Custom Curtains
Custom curtains may not be the first element that comes to mind when you think of what to budget for in a space, but here are five reasons to consider this important design detail.
This is my second time working in collaboration with Willowbloom Home, my favorite resource for custom window treatments. I'm thrilled to finally share our gorgeous plaid curtains in the family room. You can see our beautiful master bedroom custom curtains in this post. Though these custom curtains were given to me, all opinions and statements are my own.As a strong proponent for mixing high and low in any and all spaces, I understand that not everyone values custom window treatments. Some would rather invest in a vintage, hand-knotted rug, while others might prioritize original artwork. I go to great lengths to save money on furnishings and artwork, and I even DIY most projects in our home so that I can splurge on custom curtains. They're that important to me, and I hope this post will help you see why.
Reason #1: Custom Curtains Go the Distance
For obvious reasons, custom curtains last longer than store-bought ones. The fabrics used are durable, most are lined or treated to prevent sun damage, and the quality craftsmanship allows for years (often decades) of use. Have you ever been to an estate sale and seen old curtains hanging up that look like they've been there for twenty or more years? They probably have! When foundational elements of a space, such as window treatments, are created with care and attention to detail, they can last a lifetime. Simply put, custom curtains are made to go the distance.
Reason #2: Custom Curtains Hang Beautifully
Window treatments are pretty much in your face, staring at you when you walk into a room. So, having them hang neatly is important in keeping a space looking sharp. The most beautifully appointed room can look disheveled if the window treatments hang unevenly, or don't pleat well after opening and closing. Custom curtains ensure both form and function, allowing you to achieve your desired level of privacy while consistently looking beautiful. You would never settle for your wall art being crooked, and curtains are no different. They are fabric art for your windows and deserve to be treated as such.
Reason #3: Custom Curtains Elevate Your Space
Window treatments are every bit as important to get right as your choice of flooring, wall color, and lighting. They're foundational and can make or break a space. Everything in the above photo of our family room was either a Facebook Marketplace purchase or a second-hand find at an antique or thrift store, totaling no more than $500...for all of it. But adding these gorgeous plaid custom curtains from Willowbloom Home elevated all those budget-friendly pieces and created a soulful, pulled-together space that feels anything but second-hand.
Reason #4: Custom Curtains Add Value to Your Home
I've actually used this reason to convince my husband to invest in custom curtains for our home. Potential buyers are more likely to pay a higher price for your home if custom window treatments are included. It's just one less thing they have to worry about, especially if you have classic taste that appeals to many (no bright colors or bold patterns). On a practical note, custom, lined, high-quality curtains go a long way in preventing sun damage, as well as blocking out noise, light, and extreme temperatures. These are all things that are appealing to house hunters. We don't plan to sell or move for a very long time, but I'm thankful that when we do, our window treatments will be a bonus to hopefully pad our asking price.
Reason #5: Custom Curtains Are a Personal Style Statement
Besides hanging neatly, this is my favorite reason to invest in custom curtains. I love to express my creativity and personal style through textiles, and custom curtains allow me to do that. By going through Willowbloom Home, I was able to choose from their wide variety of fabrics, decide on a lining preference (privacy or blackout), and select a pleat style. I knew I wanted plaid curtains for our family room, so the fact that Willowbloom Home has a section dedicated to plaid options was perfect for me. Ultimately, I chose the Brighton Bamboo fabric with a privacy lining and two-finger pleat. They have just enough pattern, texture, and color to be interesting, but are also timeless and sophisticated. They're like a classic tweed suit that could be from decades ago or currently trending. We're so happy with how our family room is coming together. It's almost done! Our Willowbloom Home custom curtains were such a big part of this room's design. Seeing them installed and getting to use them every day has been a source of joy for me, and has only strengthened my belief that custom curtains are always a good idea.So what do you think of investing in custom curtains?
