Master Bedroom Plans

We've been slowly making progress on this space since we moved in, and while it's come a long way (see photo above), I still have so many big plans for this space (see full plans here). Those plans include:

  • adding beams
  • replacing the ceiling fan or adding a chandelier
  • creating a barn door to the bathroom and closet
  • updating the carpet
  • laying down a beautiful rug

Because we are on a mission to do everything debt-free though, those things will happen over the next year or so.These gorgeous custom drapes for the master bedroom were graciously provided by Willow Bloom Home. All opinions are 100% my own, and I'm honored to stand behind such a high quality product.custom drapes for the master bedroom

The Craftsmanship of Custom Drapes

Let's start with the craftsmanship because without that, you just have fabric that looks nice hanging on the wall. Quality drapes not only look beautiful, but they also perform day in and day out for years after installation.custom drapes master bedroom wildflower homecustom drapes master bedroom wildflower homeI've been sewing since the age of 9, and when I first discovered my love of interior design, I began making my own drapes. I can attest to how difficult it is to hide stitching, work with heavy fabric, and create lined drapes that hang properly. When these arrived at my house, the first thing I noticed was the quality of craftsmanship...it's the best I've ever seen.

The Style of Custom Drapes

The pleating is so precise and uniform, and Willow Bloom puts training ties on them before shipping, so they arrive with the pleats already trained. This allows the drapes to hang  beautifully from the top of the panels all the way to the bottom.custom drapes master bedroom wildflower homeWe've been using these drapes for a few months and the pleating has remained perfect. They look just as good closed as they do open, which is not something you can say about store-bought drapes.custom drapes for the master bedroomWhile my husband and I both love these new drapes, only one of us loves the amount of light they block out. Truthfully, my husband wanted blackout drapes, and Willow Bloom Home does offer that lining. I didn't choose that option though, because I love waking up with the sun. If we had blackout drapes, I knew it would be too dark...I need light! They do block out a ton of light and are completely private, but I love that when the light shines through them, the texture is highlighted and it's not completely dark in our room.

Custom Drapery Trim

There's something extra special about the addition of trim to a drapery panel, and I knew I wanted that detail on these custom drapes. This is the Kemble Mushroom trim, and it comes in several different colorways.custom drapes for the master bedroomIt just adds an extra touch that sets these window treatments apart and makes them unique to us and our taste.custom drapes for the master bedroomcustom drapes for the master bedroomIn these photos, the drapes look like they're hung too high off the floor, but they are closer to the floor than they appear. We had to hang them a tad higher than I usually prefer because our dogs practically live in this room, and we vacuum the carpet a lot. This hanging height is our effort to preserve the bottom hem of these gorgeous custom drapes. You typically want the bottom hem to sit about 1/4" off the floor. A trick you can use when hanging drapes is to place a flat piece of cardboard under each panel during installation. They will end up hanging at the perfect height with just the right amount of space for natural lengthening over time. Obviously if you have carpet like mine that holds dog hair, consider hanging them a bit higher.

Hardware for Custom Drapes

Willow Bloom Home really is a one-stop shop when it comes to custom draperies, and they offer a nice selection of high quality drapery hardware. As such, I opted to go with the French Return Rod with round mount in matte black both for aesthetics and light control. The French return rod allows you to block out pesky side light that seems to leak in, and it gives a nice, clean look with no finials.custom drapes for the master bedroomOne of the bigger plans I have in here is replacing this sliding glass door with french doors. For now though, these custom drapes dress it up nicely.custom drapes for the master bedroom

A Final Word On Custom Drapes

I am not one to turn up my nose at store-bought drapes. Sometimes the budget just doesn't allow for custom, but when you are able to go custom on drapes...GO CUSTOM. I'm a big believer in mixing budget-friendly items with investment pieces, and custom drapes are definitely an investment. However, they will last a decade or two, and won't be replaced as often as accessories or even furniture will be. So allowing room in the budget for custom drapes should be a consideration when planning any space, but especially bedrooms. You need the window treatments in bedrooms to be so much more than just curtains. You need them to block out light, hold up well over time, and want them to be cohesive with your design. That's a lot to ask from curtain panels that are mass produced. That said, I understand most people cannot go with custom drapes throughout the home. This is why I suggest updating each room in your home with custom window treatments over time and as your budget allows. Eventually, your whole house will have beautiful, functional, long lasting drapes/window treatments that are one-of-a-kind.Willow Bloom Home is offering my readers and exclusive 20% discount on any custom drapery order, including trim!
