Hannah's Teen Bedroom Design Plan
Published on April 22, 2020
This teen bedroom design plan is full of beautiful, muted colors, personal touches, and a whimsical vibe that is classic and slightly dramatic. A teenage girl's bedroom should reflect her style and interests, yet be timeless in order to appeal to her throughout her teenage years.
Where It All Started
I remember the first room design I ever did for Hannah...her nursery. It's been fifteen years, but I can still recall every detail of that sweet little space. What's more, I remember the peaceful feeling I had while being in there. It was then that I fell in love with design because I witnessed the impact of a well-appointed, thoughtfully curated space. To give you an idea of where I started in design, here's a peek at the Wendy Bellissimo Sir Leapsalot bedding I swooned over and used in Hannah's nursery. Needless to say, I've come a long way! Both of my girls have always had sweet rooms full of personal touches and design elements. But ever since we moved into our "forever home" a year and half ago, I haven't touched their bedrooms. Their rooms are upstairs and we are downstairs, and buying a house full of projects has prevented me from focusing on designing their spaces in this house.I also think I've sort of been avoiding designing Hannah's room because I know this is the last room I'll ever design for her while she's under our roof. She's starting high school next year, and I can hardly breathe thinking about how fast it's all going. I knew it would, and I've savored every moment. Still, I can't believe this is the last room design. I'm pouring my heart and soul into it and taking as much time as I need to get it just right.

Teen Girl's Bedroom Design Plan
I'm excited to get Hannah's room completed because I want to set her up for success in high school. We've walked a long, challenging road to get her to this point, and I'm determined to give her a peaceful, organized space to thrive in over the next four years. So without further ado, here's Hannah's Teen Bedroom Design Plan. When I create mood boards for my own home, I rarely include specifics like furniture and layout. Instead, I create what I call "conceptual design boards" because I only need a framework, color palette, and the feel of a space in order to flesh out the final product.

For instance, I know that Hannah's headboard will be made with a taupey/plum velvet fabric (represented by the plum paint swatch above). But you'll notice, I didn't even put a bed in the mood board. I also know that she wants buffalo check somewhere in the room, so I included a picture of a buffalo check blanket. This one is over $100 though, so I will add that pattern in the duvet cover for a fraction of the cost. I like my designs to be fluid enough to change on the fly, allow one decision to inform another, and end in a result that is unique, personal, and beautiful on a budget.I've already made her custom pin board, made her box pleat bed skirt, and painted her vintage chippendale nightstands . I'm almost finished with the shiplap work and her headboard fabric just arrived yesterday. So the room is well on it's way to being finished, but there's a lot to be done before we can accessorize and cross the finish line.
What's Done:
- Shiplapped all walls and niche
- Removed built-in window bench seat
- Created a custom, upholstered pin board
- Painted vintage chippendale nighstands
What's Left:
- Add a built-in desk below the window
- Create a hidden door to the attic access
- Add crown molding
- Skim coat ceiling and paint pattern
- Paint all trim and doors beige
- Create upholstered headboard
- Install picture lights
- Change overhead fan
Inspiration
Right away, Hannah knew she wanted shiplap. Other than that though, she wasn't sure what direction her room should go in. Enter excited designer mom who can't wait to help her daughter figure out her style. We perused Pinterest (come pin with me!) and came up with a few inspiration pictures to give us visual guidance.Wall Treatment | It was this bedroom design that convinced Hannah vertical was the way to go with shiplap.Trim and Wall Color | We were both really drawn to contrasting trim with white walls to brighten up her small room.Color Scheme | We've tried different color schemes for Hannah throughout the years, but we always return to some variation of lavender. This time we're including a lot of other complimentary, muted colors too!So that's Hannah's teen bedroom design plan! I'm excited to take you along for alllll the projects (there are so many in her room) and creativity in this space. And to refresh your memory (or catch you up to speed if you're new here), here's where we started when we first bought this house:
