Resize Any Vintage Rug in Two Easy Steps
Vintage rugs oftentimes come in unconventional sizes, making them difficult to use in some spaces. This post will show you how to resize any vintage rug in two easy steps so you can use it anywhere.
Resize Any Vintage Rug - Step 1
Did you know it's okay to cut a vintage rug? I would never have dared take scissors to a beautiful vintage rug...until I did. What can I say? I was desperate. After searching for over a year for the perfect-sized vintage rug for the girls' bathroom, I was over it. So, I pulled out a vintage rug I purchased on Facebook Marketplace for $50 and cut it down to size. This is the moment I revealed what I had done on Instagram...Needless to say, I was amazed that it worked and kind of shocked at what I had done!Note: For all sources in the girls' bathroom, please visit the original Vintage Elegance bathroom reveal and/or the Storybook Style bathroom refresh post.
Rug Binding - Step 2
The cutting was the fun and easy part. Then I realized I needed to address the cut edges of the rug to avoid fraying. Some people suggested using Elmer's glue or Fray Check, but I wanted a more finished look. So, I began researching rug binding. A sweet Instagram follower suggested going to a local carpet company. So, I packed up my vintage rug and headed over. They knew exactly what to do, and took me back to see their wall of colored trim. I was ridiculously amazed by all the options. It was like a beautiful, muted rainbow wall.I selected the color of trim I liked best, left my rug in their more-than-capable hands, and picked it up a few days later. It was seriously so easy! Now I have a gorgeous vintage rug that's being put to use instead of being stashed away because I couldn't find anywhere it would fit.
The Cost of Resizing a Vintage Rug
This particular carpet store charged $3 per linear foot, so the total cost for binding this size rug was around $50. Not a bad price to resize a vintage rug that was too big into a perfectly-sized piece that finishes off the girls' bathroom and warms up the space. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out, and I plan to keep this rug for a very long time. It's so pretty!Learning new things is a passion of mine. And even though accidentally learning how to resize any vintage rug felt basic and a little too easy, I'm glad I know this extra tidbit of information. It's fun and interesting learning how things like this work, and it felt like a field trip for me. "The more you know" right? And for everyone who was curious about the process of rug binding, now you know how it's done and how to go about getting your own rug bound. I just love sharing anything and everything I learn with you! Now tell me, would you ever dare cut down a vintage rug? Tell me in the comments below!
