Fusion Mineral Paint has helped me transform our home from dated to delightful in five different areas. With it’s easy application and affordable price tag, this non-toxic paint has become my go-to for paint projects in our home.
One of the questions I am asked most often, besides the Paint Colors in My Home, is what kind of paint I used on things like my banister, arched cabinet, and painted kitchen floors. So, I decided to answer that question by sharing five different areas of our home that have been dramatically changed with my favorite paint of all time…Fusion Mineral Paint.
It’s non-toxic, affordable, comes in a range of beautiful colors, rolls on like latex paint, adheres like chalk paint, and requires little to no prep work (my love language). I cannot say enough good things about this amazing paint!
Banister – Boring to Bold
This is what our staircase looked like on the day we moved in.
After painting all of our walls Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee, I knew the wood tone needed to change. So, over the course of a weekend, I brushed on two coats of Coal Black with a regular 2″ short-handled paintbrush, sealed it with Deft Acrylic in satin, and the rest is history.
This photo shows the difference between sealer and no sealer on the banister. The left spindle has no sealer, while the spindle on the right has sealer applied. Fusion Mineral Paint has a built-in top coat, so there isn’t always a need to use a sealer. I opted to use it simply because of the amount of traffic this area sees on a daily basis. If you prefer a more matte look, you can absolutely skip using a sealer.
For those of you wondering how it’s holding up, it’s been two years and it still looks great. The only wear has been the newel post at the base of the stairs because that’s the part everyone grabs…nothing a little soap and water won’t fix.
Nightstands – Tired to Timeless
When I was renovating Hannah’s Timeless Teen Girl Bedroom, I found these vintage Chippendale nightstands on Facebook Marketplace and knew they were perfect. They had a beautiful shape and interesting details, but the paint color and condition made them look tired.
Two coats of Raw Silk and one coat of Deft Acrylic and that problem was solved. Now, they’re timeless pieces that will grow with Hannah and still be appealing years from now. You can see how they transitioned seamlessly from the first version of her bedroom to the most recent version here: NYC Apartment Meets English Cottage – Hannah’s Bedroom.

Tile Floor – Dated to Distinctive
If you’ve been here longer than twenty four hours, you know how badly I want to replace our flooring. This is what our tile floors looked like when we moved in (and in some areas of our house, they still do).
New flooring is not in the budget right now, so when I temporarily remodeled our kitchen, I used Fusion Mineral Paint in Raw Silk and Coal Black to create a distinctive, harlequin tile floor pattern. It certainly wasn’t the easiest project, but it was an affordable and non-toxic way for me to break up all the brown and give us a floor we love until we can replace the tile.
For the floors, I used Fusion Mineral Paint’s Ultra Grip primer, and sealed it with SealKrete garage floor sealer because if ever there was a project that needed proper prep work and an incredibly durable top coat, it was this one. I shared the entire floor painting process in this post: DIY Painted Harlequin Tile Floors.
Arched Cabinet – 80’s to Classic
This arched cabinet (aka: the most epic Facebook Marketplace find ever) is the piece of furniture I get asked about the most. People want to know not only where I bought it, but also what I painted it with. My answer, of course, is Fusion Mineral Paint. It started out as an 80’s pinky-beige color, but I knew from the second I laid eyes on it, that it was going dark.
In order to avoid painting the glass panes, I used a product called Masking Liquid. It’s kind of like a paintable tape, and it makes painting French doors or anything with glass panes a lot easier than taping. It worked beautifully and gave me crisp lines once I peeled it off. You can see the whole process in my Instagram story highlights.
This piece did not require a sealer. I took advantage of the fact that there is a built-in top coat, and just left it a more matte finish.
Kitchen Cabinets and Backsplash – Weird to Welcoming
The Fusion Mineral Paint piece de resistance in our home is our Cozy Café Kitchen. This is what it looked like when we moved in…such a weird color combo.
I literally covered our entire kitchen in this magical paint. It’s self-leveling, emits no fumes, and adheres to almost any surface without prep work. It just made the project that much easier for me to tackle solo. I chose the color Algonquin, and we love how welcoming and warm it is in here now.
I painted everything with a 2″ short-handled paint brush and 6″ foam roller. I then sealed every painted surface with Deft Acrylic in satin because this is a kitchen…it needs to be easy to clean. It has held up remarkably well. You can see the full makeover in this post: Cozy Café Kitchen – Our Budget Makeover.
Well, those are the five different projects in my home that I tackled using Fusion Mineral Paint. This post is in no way sponsored…I’m simply sharing a product I love and use all the time, as well as answering the question, “What paint did you use for that?”
Now you know.

I plan on painting my stairs with FMP and just bought the Deft sealer because while I love FMP I don’t like the matte finish. I’ve never used Deft before, the directions called for sanding between coats of sealer. I was curious if you did this or not; thinking no because it would remove paint as well!?! I’m a beginner so what do I know 😉
Hi there, and thanks for stopping by the blog. No I did not sand in between coats of Deft…I actually never have and I use that stuff to seal everything!
Love our style and your kitchen is gorgeous! I am inspired to try fusion mineral paint on my buffet and kitchen table. I’ve been putting it off but you have given me the courage!
Thank you, Nancy
Thank you so much Nancy! I’m so glad you’re going to give it a try! I adore Fusion Mineral Paint!
I love all of your projects…simply beautiful! I would love to try doing my bannister. How were you able to get to the bottom of the bannister without getting paint on the carpet? Also, I find the Fusion paint dries very quickly and sometimes leaves brush marks. All tips would be appreciated.
Hi there Anne. Thank you so much! I got paint on the carpet (lol) but it was super dark carpet so it’s pretty hidden, but also if I had been worried about the carpet, I would have taped it off. As far as the paint, I didn’t have any issues with the paint drying quickly.
I am definitely going to give the Fusion mineral paint a go on a cabinet I found on FB marketplace. All your painting projects turned out amazing! Did you use any primer on your arched cabinet before applying the paint?
Hi there and thank you for reading! No I didn’t prime before painting my cabinet. Fusion paint requires no prep work, which is one reason I love it so much! It also doesn’t require a top coat (it has one built in) so my cabinet isn’t even sealed.
Beautiful results! Can I ask why you opted not to use the fusions brand top coat on kitchen cabinets? I am getting ready to tackle mine. Thank you.
Hi there Donna. I just LOVE Deft Acrylic. I use it on everything. It gives such a nice finish, is super easy to work with, and is unbelievably durable. It was just my preference but doesn’t mean the Fusion top coat isn’t good…it is!
I painted a buffet with Fusion thanks to your recommendation and it is amazing paint! I am no stranger to painting projects and I was really blown away with the coverage and finish. It took just a couple of hours to complete a project I had been putting off forever. Your projects look amazing and I can’t wait to see more! Just curious, about how many jars of paint did it take to do your kitchen? I am wanting to suggest it to a friend for her kitchen but wanted to get an idea of how much we would need to buy.
I believe I used 3-4 jars total for cabinets and shiplap. It goes SO far!
Love your Blog!! Love your style!! Such inspiration. Thank you!
Thank you so much Judi! I really appreciate you reading the blog.
Did you and your banister or apply an adhesive before applying the paint?
I did nothing to prep my banister for the paint…I’m lazy with prep work…lol.
Do you think this paint would be a good option for painting baseboards, trim, and wood windows? I’ve got a lot of 80s dark trim I need to tackle! BTW, I love your style. You might be my favorite decorator on Instagram. Thank you for sharing your home with us!
I definitely think it would be a good option, especially because the coverage is so good. My only hesitation with that is that I would want to seal with a sealer simply because it has more of matte finish and I prefer wipeable trim. But, having said that, if you have trim and windows that are dark wood and might need primer before latex paint, I’d definitely try this paint out on a window to see if you can get away with no primer or special paint. It’s amazing paint and worth trying. And wow, thank you SO much for the kind compliment! It’s my pleasure to share with you.
Thank you so much for the reply! I might give it a try!
It’s worth a shot!
