This month’s Pinterest Faves and Saves is all about floor-to-ceiling fireplace design options. There are so many amazing ideas out there! This post contains five different fireplaces with beautiful, floor-to-ceiling feature surrounds.
In five weeks, new flooring will be installed, which means our current fireplace surround (pictured above) will be demoed. And that means we need to decide on a floor-to-ceiling fireplace design! It’s exciting but also a bit nerve wracking because it has to be decided so quickly. I mean, I have had nearly three years to think about what I want to do with our front room fireplace. Apparently I need a deadline to actually make a decision.
The five Pinterest Faves and Saves I chose for this month represent the five different design options I’ve mulled over. They all have features I like, but considering the style of our home and the fact that this will be a DIY project, there was a clear winner. Let me walk you through my thought process on this…
Floor-to-Ceiling Fireplace Design Option #1 – Molding
If you had asked me a month ago, I would have told you that this design was the winner. Sarah over at Thrifty Décor Chick created this beautiful floor-to-ceiling fireplace design with molding details, and I love it. I could totally see it in our front living room, painted white, with a gorgeous piece of artwork and some brass sconces. However, it’s a tad off for the cottage style of our home, so we ultimately decided against this design.
Floor-to-Ceiling Fireplace Design Option #2 – Stone
Jeff and I dream of having a stone fireplace like this one designed by the incomparable Jeffrey Dungan. Given the cost of lumber right now, stone could end up being cheaper than a wood surround too…crazy! But again, I’m DIYing this, and the thought of working with stone, especially with the height of our front room ceilings, is just too much. It’s beautiful but just not practical or attainable right now.
Floor-to-Ceiling Fireplace Design Option #3 – Traditional
If I had tackled the front room fireplace when we moved in, it would look a little something like this one by Barclay Butera. I am 100% not on board with that crown at the top, but I love traditional design and thought this type of molding would be easy to achieve. Though this is not the direction I am going, there is a detail in this floor-to-ceiling fireplace design I’m paying attention to; the actual fireplace surround that is recessed. I want to keep the brick on our fireplace. I like it, and keeping it will make things so much easier…no tile work for me! However, I want to build out the floor-to-ceiling feature so it’s more prominent. This image gives me a visual for how I can achieve that.
Floor-to-Ceiling Fireplace Design Option #4 – Plaster
This floor-to-almost-ceiling fireplace design option was a wild card. I never even would have thought of it until I saw Jenna Sue and her husband creating this style of fireplace in a home they’re renovating. It seemed so easy…I can work with drywall and joint compound. Ultimately though, our house is not Spanish style and wouldn’t support this style of fireplace design, so it got booted.

Floor-to-Ceiling Fireplace Design Option #5 – Vertical Shiplap
It’s no surprise I landed on this design because everything GP Schafer does inspires me. In fact, the reading nook from his Mill Valley house project is what inspired our reading nook design. And, if you ever question the longevity of vertical planks or shiplap, just go take a stroll through the images of this home…there are vertical planks everywhere. They are classic, timeless, and interesting, and since I use the MDF ones, they are much cheaper than lumber. Plus, this is a DIY I’m comfortable with. I’ve worked with vertical shiplap in so many places in our home already. Our fireplace design will be slightly different, but this is the direction we’re headed and I’m so excited!
Whew! So glad the decision about our floor-to-ceiling fireplace design is made. Now, to actually build it. I’d love to hear which fireplace design you would pick for your own home. Tell me in the comments below!

Jeffrey Dungan is SO talented! One day maybe we’ll have a fireplace like that, but I’m thrilled to take on using vertical shiplap to create this fireplace feature!
