Affordable and Accessible Decorative Trim

It might seem like affordable, accessible decorative trim doesn't exist and that only designers with a trade account have access to the good, expensive trims. This post proves that affordable trim DOES exist and it's available to anyone if you just know where to look. It's no secret that interior designers have access to the most incredible and unique items not found on retail shelves. The specialty textiles, bespoke (custom) furniture, and decorative trims they use aren't meant to be accessed by the general public. And while I understand the reasoning behind this, I still want to decorate my house with things that are unusual, special, and a little extra...like decorative trim.I'm just unwilling to accept that my house has to be run-of-the-mill simply because I don't have access to all the designer textiles and trims that designers do. So, over the years I've discovered several of my own affordable and accessible sources for those special touches I love so much, including decorative trim. And any time I share the trim I use on curtains, bed skirts, or other projects, I get asked where I find them. Today, I'm happy to share my tips for finding quality decorative trim, as well as specific sources I regularly utilize. My hope is that this information will help you add that special layer to your décor easily and without breaking the bank. It can be done, and I'll show you how. 

Tips for Finding Affordable Decorative Trim

1 | Start With Your Local Fabric Store - My town only has a Joann's and Hobby Lobby, but if you live near a Hancock Fabrics, Calico Corners, or any other specialty fabric stores (especially little local ones that aren't chains), check there first. While they may not have anything to write home about as far as trim, you just never know until you look. I found the jute trim for my front room curtains at Joann's...a place I did not expect to find decorative trim I'd like. Oh, and you don't have to know how to sew to use decorative trim in your home. This beautiful jute trim is hot glued onto my custom, pleated drapes because I decided to add it after they were hung up. It may not be the proper way, but it worked and that's all that matters.Also, don't forget to check the clearance and remnant bins. I scored enough wide blue decorative trim for Noelle's bed skirt and entire bed canopy for around $25 because it was on clearance. I would have never found it though if I hadn't looked in a clearance bin that was off in a corner of the store. Noelle's bed canopy (tutorial coming soon)...Noelle's bed skirt (bed skirt tutorial)...2 | Check Antique Shops and Thrift Stores - You might not think to look in places like thrift stores or antique shops, but I have found some really cool vintage trims in both of those locations. In my favorite local antique store, one of the booths started selling tons of vintage trim, so I bought some and used it for a sweet touch on Noelle's bed sconces as well as on Hannah's bed skirt. My favorite wall in my favorite antique store...The vintage trim I chose for Noelle's bedside sconces...The vintage floral trim ties into the yellow gingham fabric and the "Wildflower" art so beautifully. I fell in love with this berry-colored, vintage decorative trim and bought every yard they had for Hannah's bed skirt. At fifty cents a yard, it was beyond affordable. Here's a closer look...3 | Take Your Search Online - Etsy is a great place to find unique, vintage, and designer trims, especially when you can't find the beautiful, wide trims only designers can access with a trade account. I rounded up my favorite Etsy sources for affordable, accessible decorative trim at the end of this post. I also suggest Googling "wide decorative designer trim" or some variation of those words and seeing if you can find a fabric store that sells specialty trims online. I have found that a simple Google search can be more efficient and fruitful than you might expect. 

Specific Sources for Affordable Decorative Trim

1 | Hobby Lobby - I suggest physically going into the store for this source. They have a lot of products in general, and trying to weed through them online with search terms like "trim" or "decorative trim" gives you an overwhelming amount of results. Remember to look in the clearance section while you're there. I love this wide Greek Key trim they carry in a few different colors:2 | Joann Fabrics - Again, I suggest physically going into the store to look at their large assortment of decorative trims. Personally, I think Joann's has one of the best selections of affordable decorative trims, especially for a retail chain store. The beautiful jute trim I used in my front room is still available, as well as so many other unique and fun trims. 3 | Granny's Attic - This source is only for Southern California locals unfortunately. I just happened to find a gold mine of vintage trims in the back of the store, so if you're local and looking for unique trim, go visit Granny's Attic. 4 | Etsy - Okay, this one's for everyone, but obviously you can only shop online, so I suggest ordering samples.
