Velvet Headboard Roundup

After I revealed Hannah's Timeless Teen Bedroom Makeover, one of the most-asked questions I received was whether or not I would be sharing a tutorial for the berry velvet headboard I made. The short answer is no. The longer explanation is that the heart of a legit designer beats inside this stay-at-home-mom, and I love custom items that are unique to my house, my family, and my taste.There's a term called bespoke, and it means "made for a particular customer or user." Simply put, Hannah was my customer and I wanted to create something only she would have. She is such a unique human being (in the very best way), so my design choices were almost all bespoke. As such, I chose carefully which projects I would share with the world and which ones were just for her.This one was just for her. Even though I didn't create a tutorial, I did save a few in-progress shots on my phone that I thought I'd share with you. If you are the DIY type, perhaps this will help you piece together how to make this type of headboard. If DIY isn't your thing, I've rounded up some of my favorite velvet upholstered headboards in fun colors (though most of them have a neutral color option) so you can get the look with the click of a button.

A Glimpse of the Process

I knew from the outset that I was going to make Hannah's headboard, but I didn't know what style of wings I wanted. One day though, I happened to be watching Ashley Gilbraith's Instagram stories, and I caught a glimpse of this beautiful custom headboard. Instantly I knew the shape of the wings was perfect. I started this project by cutting a piece of cheap plywood to the dimensions I wanted the main portion of the headboard to be. Then I attached a super thick, memory foam mattress topper to the plywood with spray adhesive and trimmed it to size. I then wrapped the foam and plywood with batting and stapled it down. After that, I cut out the wings and attached foam and batting to them. If you're attempting this project, feel free to get creative with the shape of the wings. I finished the headboard by upholstering the outside of the wings, adding piping, and then using screws to attach the back to the wings. And just like that, it was done and Hannah loved it!For a seasoned DIYer, this isn't too complicated, but it does require the use of a jig saw, staple gun, and a basic working knowledge of how to upholster. If you are a newbie, I recommend searching Pinterest for upholstered headboard tutorials and tweaking them to your design. I'm a big believer that with the right amount of stubborn determination, anybody can learn how to do anything and then actually do it. So, if this is something you want to take on either because you're working on a budget or you want something totally unique in a color that's not available pre-made, I know you can do it. If the idea of making your own headboard is overwhelming but you still love the look of a velvet headboard, I've got you covered. This has been quite the journey and one that has paralleled an unprecedented time in our country's history. Though I am sad that this room makeover is over and the world is no longer hushed the way it was during quarantine, I have so many memories from both to hold onto, and that makes me happy. Thank you for following along, cheering me on, and being excited for each milestone that got me to the finish line on this one. Now, onto the next room!
